If you’re traveling for business, you may be wondering what to wear on a business flight. This is one way to have an interesting discussion with frequent flyers, and when you ask them about the dress code for business and first class, as well as the airport lounges, you’ll often get many different responses.
You’ll see a variety of dress styles in business and first class, including everything from sweatpants and pyjamas to a full business suit. Dressing well is important because ultimately you’re representing your company, and you never know when you may run into someone you know or work with. You also may meet someone sitting next to you and have an excellent networking opportunity, so you’ll want to put your best foot forward.
But it’s also important be comfortable while flying, especially if you’ll be flying long haul. No one wants to be trying to catch a few hours sleep while in an uncomfortable suit or pantyhose.
If you’re flying business and long haul, you’ll often be given a pair of pyjamas for the flight, and the flight attendants can hang up your clothes if you’ve chosen to wear a suit so that it will stay clean and unwrinkled for the other end.
So whats should you wear?
Women:
Consider dress jeans, which could be nicely tailored. Dark jeans always look more formal than lighter coloured jeans, and you can pair these with some comfortable flat shoes or boots. Heels shouldn’t be worn on the plane in case you need to evacuate, and your feet may swell which will make them more uncomfortable. If you must take heels for the other end, keep them in your carry on.
A comfortable shirt could include a business style shirt, and or you could wear a larger sized shirt with a belt.
Layers are often a good idea, since the plane temperature can vary from hot and stuffy to freezing. Bring a large scarf which can also double as an extra blanket, or a pashmina/cashmere wrap.
Men:
Men may want to wear a button down shirt, and a pocket is always useful for your boarding pass. You could also wear a casual jacket such as a moleskin or tweed, which can also be useful if it’s chilly on the plane, and you’ll be able to use the extra pockets for passports, wallets, and gadgets.
A good tip is to wear a t-shirt underneath the button-down if you’ll be on an overnight flight. you can then remove the button down, sleep in the t-shirt, and change the t-shirt when you arrive.
Dressy chinos are a good option, as they breathe well, they’re light, and they’ll stand up to some creasing from travel. A casual Oxford cotton shirt goes well, or a plain cotton polo works for a more casual look.
