Many people assume that Guatemala is dangerous for tourists, but every year, thousands of people visit the country, meet the locals, soak up the culture, see the sights, and leave raving about the place to their friends.
Guatemala is a country of contradiction, where you’ll find Ralph Lauren stores and villages where people live off a dollar a day. This is a country where you get more than just a holiday, but instead have experiences that are likely to change who you are and how you see the world.
Here are the best places to visit in Guatemala:
Antigua
When most people arrive in Guatemala they skip the city and head straight to Antigua. This World Heritage Site is located anywhere from an hour to two hours (depending on traffic) from Guatemala city and taxis and shuttles run through the day and nights, taking tourists between the airport and the cobblestone streets of Antigua. Here, you’ll find a charming central park, horses and carriages, volcanos, cathedrals, and some of the best coffee in Guatemala. Spend some time hiking the volcano Pacaya, or head out to a coffee plantation for brunch and to learn about how coffee is made in Guatemala.
Flores
Located up north, Flores is the jumping off point for trips to Tikal, the famous Mayan ruins. It’s hot up here, so be sure to book a hotel with air conditioning, and if you’re short on time, flights run from Guatemala City twice a day and will save you 12 hours on a shuttle or bus each way. Tours to Tikal can be booked in Flores, and leave at 3.30am, 6am and 8am, but be sure to go as early as you can to spend more time exploring the ruins and less time hunting for a shady spot and looking for Gatorade.
Lake Atitlan
There are many different villages where you can stay surrounding the lake, depending on the type of experience you want. Each have unique things to offer, but the best have a mix of laid-back hostels and hotels, coffee shops and craft stores, along with an excellent nightlife. The hiking in the area is great, and you can travel by boat between villages. Expect the shuttle to take 4-5 hours from Antigua.
Semuk Champey
These gorgeous rock pools are a must-visit, particularly if you’re heading up north to Flores and Tikal. Take a tour of the caves (complete with candlelight), hike up to the lookout point and spend some time wallowing in the pools. Tubing down the river with a beer in your hand is also an option, and you’re likely to meet tourists from all over the world here.
Guatemala City
Guatemala City is divided into numerous “zonas”, and some are safer than others. Tourists spend time in zonas 4, 10, and 14, and you’ll find anything you need at the many malls, and can also find some of the best restaurants in Guatemala here.
