Travelling in South Africa? Here’s where to go

There’s a reason South Africa is on the bucket list for many travellers. The country is famous for its incredible scenery, huge variety of wildlife, and multi-cultural cities.

If you’re travelling in South Africa, here are some of the must-visit spots so you can truly make the most of the experience:

Durban

If you’re after a vibrant city with friendly locals, and some of the best restaurants, beaches, and nightclubs around, Durban is the place to go. Most of the main attractions are scattered around the harbour, as the city is spread over more than 50km of coastline. Durban also has a huge Indian population, so the Indian food here is superb.

Kruger Park

Perhaps the most famous part of South Africa, Kruger Park is where travellers will find the greatest diversity of wildlife, and it’s home to Africa’s Big 5. Kruger Park has a wide variety of accommodation to suit every style and budget, including hostels, hotels, and guesthouses, and it’s also a good hub for those who would like to spend some time enjoying the beaches of Cape Town, or relaxing on a tropical island of the coast of Mozambique.

Johannesburg

Johannesburg used to be passed up in favour of other places in South Africa, but due to the emerging food scene, excellent cafe culture, and impressive night life, it has recently become one of the more popular spots to visit. Shopaholics will feel at home here, as there are plenty of high-end boutiques just waiting to be browsed.

Sun City

Located just an hour and a half from Johannesburg, Sun City is brimming with hotels, resorts, casinos, and entertainment. There’s also a world-class golf course here, and a huge waterpark which draws visitors from around the globe. Honeymooners will want to spring for a room at the Palace of the Lost City, a five star hotel which brings the romance of an African holiday right to your hotel room.

Cape Town

Known as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Cape town is also famous for its beaches, and tourists love to hike the iconic Table mountain, try wine at Cape Winelands, and visit the penguins at Boulders Beach. Visitors can relax by taking a picnic to Kirstenbosch Gardens, or grab a drink at the V&A Waterfront, which is popular with both tourists and locals.

Rustenburg
Don’t be fooled by the name, which means ‘town of rest’, since this bustling city is anything but. Rustenburg has all the features of a big city, but is located in the middle of lush greenery, making it an excellent place to stay while exploring the many nature reserves in the area.

Jeffreys Bay

Those who like to surf will want to head to Jeffreys Bay, which is 65km from Port Elizabeth, and the waves here are often between 1.2 and 3m high, and from 150-300m wide, making it one of the top five best surfing destinations in the world.
