The Friendliest Islands Around the World

If you truly need to relax and get away from it all, there are few things better than an island holiday. And while some of the most popular islands in the world are known for their aquamarine waters, tropical surroundings and abundance of excellent hotels, travellers are making it clear by their choices that the local culture is impacting their experience.

Much of the time friendliness also often equals excellent service when it comes to travel, and the people who work at the resorts and hotels where you stay will often play an integral part in ensuring that your vacation is memorable.

Here are a few of the friendliest islands for your next sun, sand and surf adventure:

Fiji

Located all the way over in the Pacific, Fiji is just 3 hours from New Zealand, and the locals are always willing to go the extra mile and beyond the call of duty for visitors. Staff members are relaxed and the island life is about taking it easy and enjoying yourself. The tipping culture of elsewhere hasn’t yet permeated Fiji (especially because the majority of visitors are Australians and Kiwis), but tips are much appreciated since the average Fijian in the hospitality industry is usually only making a couple of dollars an hour.

Kauai, Hawaii

Known as the ‘Garden Isle’, Kauai is famous for its lush forests, and has some of the highest cliffs in the world, a rich cultural history, and friendly locals. You’ll need to get used to ‘island time’ if you visit Kauai, and you’ll be able to spend your days browsing local products, or maybe getting adventurous with zip lining, hiking and sea kayaking.

Be sure to do the Kalalau Trail for extraordinary views, and hire a local guide for a chance to learn more about the island.

Malta

This beautiful Mediterranean island is known for its limestone cliffs and especially its history (think fortresses, castle walls and baroque churches). The public can now see the Fort Saint Elmo which is a huge 540,000 square feet and now reopened to the public. Locals are now eagerly opening their doors to newly interested tourists and are warm, welcoming, and curious about visitors.

Friendliest Islands

Cozumel, Mexico

Located a short ferry ride from Playa Del Carmen, Cozumel boasts plenty of amazing all-inclusive resorts, where the staff will remember your name and favourite drinks and treat you to a funny story or teach you a few words of Spanish. The beaches are excellent, but the biggest reason to visit is the diving, which is some of the best in the world. Expect to see manta and sting rays, sea turtles, reefs, and more fish than you can shake a fin at.

Vancouver Island, British Columbia

If you’re looking for some rugged wilderness, Vancouver Island is the place to go. Visitors have called the locals the “nicest people in Canada”, and you’ll be able to hike to the hot springs, cuddle up in front of a fireplace or wander along Chesterman Beach.
