Beautiful Mountain Towns

While most people tend to flock towards the beach during the summer months, others are making their way to the mountains for some relaxation time. The question is where to go for the trip. So here are two of our favorite picks for folks that love the rocky hillsides better than the sandy shores.

Shirakawa-go, Japan: This World Heritage spot is the perfect destination for those seeking a respite from the busy cities that characterize the country. The picturesque houses found here date as far back as the 1800s. Their unusual roofs were specially designed to withstand the heavy snowstorms that occur in the area during the winter months. Travelers who are stopping by the town can also visit the local waterfalls and hunt for the legendary wealth that vanished into the earth along with Kaerikumo Castle during an earthquake in the Middle Ages. Visitors who come in October can even participate in the Doburoku Matsuri festival, which celebrates the local sake.

Bled, Solvenia: Easily reached from the nearby capitol in Ljubljana, this scenic lakeside village remains a favorite with travelers. Fishing, swimming, and boating are all popular pastimes at this spot. Those that don’t mind the steep 15 minute climb to Bled Castle can check out the building that dates back to the 1600s and the artifacts within it. Admission to the castle cost about $9 for adults. Meanwhile, the Triglav National Park can be found just outside of town. Hiking the trails and rafting on the rivers are typical activities at this location. The park is also home to a small church that dates back to the 1200s and contains some lovely frescos. Of course, touring the Hag’s Tooth Caves is another fun activity that visitors might enjoy while they’re here.
