Chicago often gets overlooked in favour of the more famous New York, however, this slightly cleaner and prettier cousin is a must-visit for anyone visiting the United States in summer. Chicago has it all- beach, shopping, clubbing, excellent restaurants and enough activities to keep even the busiest tourist happy. Here are some fun things to do in Chicago this summer:
Visit Navy Pier
Navy Pier is a boardwalk, and with 1.5 miles ready to be wandered, you’ll find that there’s something for everyone in the family. More than 8 million visitors visit Navy Pier each year, and it’s lined with restaurants like Billy Goat’s tavern, Bubba Gump and Capi’s Italian Kitchen and shops selling toys, clothes, and souvenirs. Along with all of the food and shopping, you’ll find the Shakespeare Theatre along with an IMAX which shows the latest movies on its huge screen.
Don’t forget to take a ride on the Ferris wheel, which is 15 stories high and has an incredible view of the city. There are also plenty of other rides to keep you occupied.
Head to the Beach
The beaches open in late May each year, and there are plenty to choose from. Oakwood Beach is the newest in Chicago and located on the South Side with a huge mural by the artist Jeff Zimmerman. Montrose Beach is another favourite and has a fenced-off area for dogs along with space for volleyball, free wifi, kayak and water sport rentals, and a lifeguard station, however the most popular beach is North Avenue, which has cute, unique beach house and plenty of amenities like lockers, jet ski and kayak rentals, and volleyball courts.
Take a Sightseeing Tour
The Chicago skyline is beautiful, and the best way to see it is out on the lake and with a guide who can tell you about the history and architecture of the city. Consider taking the Shoreline Sightseeing tour- the company has been in business since 1939 and the expert guides will give you interesting tidbits, background and facts about the buildings in the Windy City. Be sure to take a camera with you.
Hang out in a rooftop bar
Chicago is a great city for those who like to have a drink with a view. Cindys is a favourite, and you’ll find it at the top of the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel and you’ll find some of the most incredible views of the windy city including the lake and Millennium Park. The drinks are pretty and the food comes in large portions so go with a group.
Fountainhead is another great option if you like taverny, homey pubs, and it’s underrated so don’t tell too many people about the great drinks and atmosphere.
GreenRiver is located in Streeterville, and is a well-known restaurant and also one of the best bars in Chicago. Think unexpected ingredients along with innovative combinations of flavours along with an excellent spot on the rooftop.
