Flying into 2017

If you’re planning to get on an airplane in the next few months, here are some things that you probably want to keep in mind. Some of them are positive changes. Others will probably annoy the heck out of you, particularly if you’re already trying to cram everything you own in a small pack that meets the overhead bin rules so you can skip the checked luggage fees.

Even so, now is a very a good time to fly. Flight cancellations and baggage complaints are now less likely than ever. Delta Airlines is bringing backing free food for coach passengers on some of its long haul routes.  Lucky travelers might even be able to score $70 one-way flights to Europe are happening this summer on WOW Airlines from several different airports. Norwegian Airlines are also now offering $65 one-way flights from various places but available tickets are in limited quantity. Of course, that’s still great news if you live near one of those cities. In other airline news, a pet terminal is even opening in NYC so that travelers taking their pets along for the ride can make sure they’re adequately looked after during layovers and local residents can leave theirs at the airport for pick up as soon as they return home.

In other good news the exchange rate of dollars to euros and pounds continues to be lots lower than it has in the past few years. American travelers who have the money should probably go to Europe now to take advantage of this fact. Other places with good exchange rates include Canada, Brazil, or Mexico. Just be careful and be aware of government travel advisories. Canadians should also note that their dollars are now worth more when compared to both the British pound and the euro. These exchange rates are lower than they have been in some time but are still relatively high.

There has also been some troubling news for frequent flyers in recent months. American Airlines and United Airlines have decided not to let people who buy their cheapest fares use the overhead bins anymore. A lot of other companies are considering doing the same thing so that they can reduce their prices and attract more clients. However, many popular budget airlines such as Ryan Air allow their customers at least a purse/laptop bag and a small carry-on bag. Of course, the company has gone on record as saying they’re being too lenient in regards to the luggage they do allow on their flight. They’ve said that they plan on enforcing their current regulations much more carefully in the future.

Meanwhile, backseat screen technology may become a thing of the past or perhaps a perk for certain classes since apparently our connectivity keeps us entertained enough on long flights. This isn’t always the case if your smartphone dies mid-flight or you’re stuck in the middle seat of a budget flight that’s been grounded for far too long. If this goes into effect, hopefully airlines will make up for it by providing outlets at every seat and free chargers for travelers that need them.

But, as always, we wish you happy travels in this upcoming year!
