Europe Off The Beaten Path

Although all your friends are headed with the rest of the crowds to the southern portions of Asia, there is still no reason to discount Europe as a travel destination if it is more appealing to you. While certain places in the region may be old news at this point, there are still some great spots that don’t often get the recognition they deserve. In fact, this recently published article listed some particularly noteworthy cities in Europe that remain under the radar through no fault of their own. In keeping with our earlier blog post on a similar topic, here are three of the most promising places on the aforementioned list and what to do while you’re there.

Almeria (Image Source: Wikipedia)

Almeria, Spain. Uncrowded, scenic beaches never lose their appeal, especially in Europe where they are rather elusive spots. So it’s not surprising that visitors are drawn to this seaside town where idyllic swimming spots and small fishing villages dot the surrounding coastline. Travelers who really want to get away from it all should also check out the nearby Nijar Natural Park for a fantastic change of pace. Be sure to bring your binoculars for a closer perspective on the local flamingo colony that is in residence here.

Ithaca (Image Source: Wikipedia)

Ithaca, Greece. Famed in legend for being the homeland of clever Odysseus and his loyal wife Penelope, this Greek island has not achieved the notoriety on the travel circuit that others have received. Perhaps this is because folks heard what happened to the last bunch of visitors that overstayed their welcome but it is far more likely that Ithaca’s inaccessible nature keeps the hordes at bay. However, those that take the time to venture off the beaten path will no doubt appreciate traditional atmosphere that pervades the place as well as the gorgeous beaches that can be found here. Renting a boat and visiting all the local swimming spots is the chief pastime on Ithaca. Yet travelers should also stop by the island’s two monasteries for the scenic overview they provide of the entire area.

Amiens Cathedral (Image Source: Wikipedia)

Amiens, France. While the huge cathedral is the main attraction here, there is plenty to see both in the town and the surrounding area. For a poignant reminder of earlier times, travelers can arrange for a tour of the Somme battlefields that are located just outside the city. Within the town limits, travelers can take a tour of the canal filled market garden for about $6.50 USD. While the excursion would be lovely on a spring day, it may not be everyone’s cup of tea during the winter months. Other points of interest in Amiens include the local zoo, the Picardie Museum, and Samara Park where the focus is on life during the Iron Age.
