Authorities have declared a no-fly zone around the Bardarbunga Volcano of Iceland. The volcano began rumbling about a week ago and has been causing 1000s of small earthquakes and has been expected to start erupting over the past few days. Today (Saturday August 23, 2014) it began erupting which has prompted the country to close the airspace over the volcano and in the surrounding area.
The last time a volcano erupted in Iceland in 2011 it had a major impact on all flights going into Europe because it spewed ash 20 km into the air which made it dangerous for planes to fly. It is not known yet how this years incident will impact flights not in the no-fly zone.
