Aside from our common humanity, people around the world have one thing in common. We each get up every morning and stumble to the kitchen in hopes of getting a nutritious bite to eat before beginning our daily tasks. The question remains should the fare be hearty and packed with enough calories to last until lunchtime or light and digestible to avoid feeling overstuffed on the way to work? The answer to that question is often a matter of personal preference but it can also be cultural as well.
The British and people from the American South tend to focus on heavy, calorie laden breakfasts that are sure to fill up travelers. The denizen of the former country tend to go for an array of baked beans, sausage, and scrambled eggs that are often complimented by buttered toast as well as cooked tomatoes and/or mushrooms. The latter group prefers eggs, grits, toast, and a side of either sausage or bacon. Hearty breakfast are also found in places like Scandinavia and Germany where diners may find themselves confronted with a wide variety of meats, breads, cheeses, and assorted toppings.
Of course, small pastries such as croissants are breakfast staples in much of Europe. These treats are often accompanied by steaming cups of either cocoa in countries like Spain or coffee in places like Italy. In places that were colonized by European powers, such as Australia, the locals tend to make concessions to their culinary heritages but often add their own twist to things. How else could we explain the popularity of condiments such as Vegemite? Meanwhile, rice and soup are often found on the breakfast menus of many Asian countries. Olives, dates, figs, and honey are also quite popular items in most portions of the Middle East.
However, pancakes tend to be universally popular, with different versions appearing in places from India to Poland. Fresh local fruit, eggs, cured meats, and bread products are also seen in numerous locations around the globe. Clearly, no matter where you’re traveling, there is sure to be something tasty served up at your hotel first thing in the morning to help you get going wherever the road may take you.
Bon apetite!
