Popular as a movie and novel setting, the small town of Beaufort, South Carolina can serve as a good day trip from Savannah, Georgia. It also makes a good stop on the route north from there. After all, Beaufort has earned numerous accolades. It was even named as one of Southern Living’s “Best Small Southern Towns” and one of National Geographic’s “50 Best Adventure Towns.”

Considering those titles, it is not too hard to find something to do in Beaufort. History lovers can stroll the scenic downtown area which is home to spots like St. Helena’s Episcopal Church, which dates back to the 1700s, and the John Mark Verdier House, a Federal style home that housed Union troops during the Civil War. Admission to the church is free but touring the Verdier House costs approximately $10 for adults. Another good place to stop by is the Beaufort History Museum. This small but interesting museum is located in the city’s old arsenal. The tours given by the incredibly knowledgeable staff cost only $5 for adults.

Just outside of town is the Hunting Island State Park. It’s a great place for beach lovers to spend a relaxing day on the shore. Admission to the park is $5 for adults and bathroom facilities are provided. Adventurous sorts can additionally climb to the top of the local lighthouse, which dates back to 1859, for an excellent view over the surrounding area. Taking the hike costs approximately $2 for adults but the view is well worth it. Although the lighthouse closes its’ doors at 4:45 pm, the park stays open for an additional hour and 15 minutes.

All this sightseeing is sure to make you hungry. Good places to stop for food in Beaufort include the Old Bull Tavern for pizza and beer, the Red Rooster for their yummy breakfasts, or Duke’s Barbeque of Beaufort for precisely what the name would imply as well as other Southern style favorites. Those travelers that prefer authentic ethnic cuisine should stop by the Athenian Gardens which serves tasty Greek favorites such as gyros, baklava, and hummus throughout the week. Those headed towards Parris Island that find themselves passing through the Port Royal area should also check out Alvin Ord’s Sandwich Shop where large, affordable sandwiches on homemade bread and pink lemonade are the name of the game.
