Falling Airfare Prices

Travelers that have been waiting ages for airfare prices to drop so that they can go on their dream vacation shouldn’t have to wait too much longer for their wish to become a reality. Although plane tickets typically become cheaper as autumn gets underway, there are some additional factors that are helping make prices go down quicker than usual this year. Not only have fuel costs have been dropping, the American Department of Justice has been investigating claims that the airlines are all working together to stick customers with unnecessarily high prices. As a result, airfare is predicted to fall to its lowest level in years by the end of August.

This is obviously a good time to take that trip that you had been putting off in order to avoid sticker shock. After all, paying $500 to $600 per person for a transcontinental flight seems monetarily wasteful when a long car or bus ride would be much cheaper. Yet the prospect of cramming a ton of luggage and several family members into a small vehicle for several days of travel is enough to give even the bravest of souls pause. It’s no surprise then that these trips rarely get taken. However, plane tickets across the US are now quite reasonably priced and travelers with no fear of flying shouldn’t think twice about using other allegedly economical methods to get to their destination.

Of course, one can’t swim across the ocean and many would-be travelers have postponed European trips because airfare has gotten so pricy. Luckily, airfare to Europe is also slated to cost less than usual in the upcoming months. A quick search of prices yesterday revealed this to indeed be the case. Tickets from Atlanta (ATL) to London (LON) on Monday, September 7 and Monday, September 14 are currently at $1010. Yet taking the same trip from August 10 to August 17 will cost around $1365 dollars per person.

Naturally, some of the price discrepancy seen here can be attributed to the fact that one of the trips would be considered a last-minute flight. However, a search for the same destinations between September 14 and September 21st bought up even further discounts at around $990 a head.  Despite the downturn in airfare prices, travelers should nonetheless be aware that European currency remains strong and make their plans accordingly. At the time of this writing, 1.09 dollars equaled 1 euro and exchange rate in the United Kingdom was steeper still at 1.55 US dollars to the pound.
