The Highlights of Malaysia: Where to go, and What to do

Malaysia is located in Southeast Asia, and can sometimes be overlooked in favour of Thailand and Indonesia. The country can be found on the North end of the island of Borneo, a well as on the peninsula of the Asian mainland.

This is a country that is an intriguing mix of old and new, with glimpses of both a developing country, and the modern world. Here are some of the highlights of the amazing country that is Malaysia:

Kinabalu National Park

Before heading to the Kinabalu National Park, spend some time relaxing in Kota Kinabalu, which is the capital city of East Malaysia. Kinabalu National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and if you’re interested in exploring the outdoors you’ll love this place, as it has one of the largest collections of flora and fauna in the world. If you’re the adventurous type, be sure to take the trip to the summit of the Borneo Peak.

Palau Langkawi

Considering this place is known as “The Jewel of Kedah” for its jungle, pristine beaches, and gorgeous, clear waters, this is the perfect place to spend some time sunbathing, visiting the many spas, seafood restaurants, beach bars, while interacting with the friendly locals.

Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is a must visit if you’re visiting Malaysia, and this multi-cultural city has Chinese, Indian, and Malaysian influences, giving it an exciting feel, and some of the best food around.

Be sure to head to the Petronas Towers, which are currently the largest twin towers in the world, and the fifth tallest skyscraper. At 451.9m, the views are simply stunning, so visit the skybridge on the 41st floor, as ell as the viewing deck on the 86th floor. Tickets sell out in advance though, so check online before you arrive to ensure you’ll be able to visit. The massive mall inside has everything you could need, and plenty of options for food as well.

Georgetown, Penang

Penang is the most-visited place in Malaysia, and the fact that the island has managed to retain its colonial traditions, while somehow also embracing modernity, has made it hugely popular with tourists around the world. This is another UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, so be sure to spend a few days here exploring the ornate temples, forests, beaches, old-fashioned mansions, and lakes.

Cameron Highlands

The Cameron Highlands are where you can find the best produce in Malaysia, so be sure to tour the many strawberry and tea plantations, and tour some of the agricultural farms.

The highlands are only four hours from Kuala Lumpur, and located 1,500 metres above sea level, making it a lot cooler than other parts of Malaysia, since the temperatures vary between 22.25º during the day, and 15-22º at night.

If you’ve been thinking about visiting Southeast Asia, do yourself a favour and be sure to add Malaysia to the list of countries you’re planning to visit. With so many different places to explore, it’s sure to end up being a favourite.
