Visit Iceland

There’s been a lot of buzz around Iceland as a travel destination for 2017. Perhaps those beautiful photographs filling up your social media news feeds have provided you with enough incentive to brave the cold temperatures near the Arctic Circle. Or perhaps you decided to take advantage of the free stopover that’s lately been offered by Norwegian airlines on incoming flights to Europe, which allows travelers to visit two different spots without paying for an extra plane tickets. In any case, Iceland is a very scenic country that certainly deserves a second look when it comes to selecting a vacation spot.

This country is home to numerous geysers, thermal baths, fjords, and spectacular waterfalls. Best of all, most of these sites are completely free to visit at the moment. Opportunities for spotting local wildlife such as puffins and whales abound. Travelers during the winter months can even take advantage of the country’s low light pollution levels to see the spectacular Northern Lights in all their glory. Brave souls might even want to fly over to where the active volcanoes ooze lava, threatening to erupt once more with the same force that grounded numerous flights and caused plenty of delays a few years ago. For now though, they remain mercifully quiet.

However, the obvious downside to any Icelandic trip is that the country’s average winter temperatures hover around freezing and the country rarely sees temperatures above 70 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius). Travelers should also be aware that Iceland can be a very expensive country to visit, even with a free stopover. But there are plenty of ways to see all that Iceland has to offer without spending a fortune. These include cooking your own meals, camping where possible, avoiding alcoholic beverages, and going in groups so that renting a car or camper van is a feasible option. Just don’t forget to bring warm clothes and waterproof boots!
