Staying Stylish

Just because you’re on the road doesn’t mean you should abandon all sense of style. Here are three good general tips to help ladies avoid fashion faux pas and stay stylish as they make their way around the globe.

Keep it conservative. Just because your chosen destination is the kind that bakes in the tropic sun doesn’t mean that you should bare everything. In places like India, Thailand, parts of Africa and Southern Asia, and most parts of the Middle East modesty is considered a big deal. Even on the beaches, the topless sunbathing that is considered fine in Europe is largely taboo in these places. Once travelers leave the beaches, they should cover up accordingly. This not only helps prevent unwanted attention, it also shows respect for local cultures. Travelers that correctly adopt the local forms of dress are often treated with more respect than their contemporaries. However, ladies with lightly colored hair may attract notice in India, even if they are wearing traditional style garments.

Keep it classy. This is especially true in fashionable destinations such as Italy and France where running around in frumpy jeans and ancient t-shirts will have travelers labeled as North American slobs in a split second. Other items to avoid include ball caps, tennis shoes, and fanny packs. Female travelers would be best to stick to dark colored slacks or knee-length skirts with ballet style shoes and a loose fitting top. If you’re visiting France in the colder months, you’ll definitely want to add a scarf because its’ rare that a woman is seen without one. They also make a nice trip souvenir.

Keep it comfortable! Although athletic style footwear can cause people to frown on you, there’s no need to risk breaking your neck on the cobblestones, steep staircases, and crumbling monuments by wearing heels. In fact, please don’t. Even if you’re confident of your sassy skills, heels tend get caught in cobblestone streets and all it takes is one misstep to cause a fall that could ruin a vacation. A good compromise is by wearing some nicely made, dark colored walking boots. This allows you to get into the fancier places but be comfortable as you go around town.
